    Theresa Asked

Are campfires allowed at individual campsites in Fort Wilderness? We will be there in late October.

    Hi there Theresa,

I am a definite "Fort Fan" having stayed in the Cabins multiple time over the years.  I am super excited about my first "real" Fort Wilderness camping experience, as we will be roughing it in an RV on our upcoming trip this Spring!

Campfires are allowed at your Fort Wilderness Campsites but you must adhere to the resort rules.  No open fires are allowed and any individual campsite fire must be lit in a fully self-contained pit that you must provide yourself.  An internet search for "approved Fort Wilderness Fire Pits" should yield a copy of the actual flyer they hand out upon arrival, but I'm happy to summarize it for you the best I can:

Approved units must have a "solid metal top design preventing an exposed flame and the releasing of embers and sparks."  Models that "do not have a solid metal top and ones that allow an exposed flame and the releasing of embers and sparks" are not permitted.  Also on the prohibited list are propane fire pits that have an exposed flame and artificial logs in a device that emits an exposed flame!

If you really want to get that open, marshmallow roast-worthy campfire, be sure to head over to Chip and Dale's Campfire Sing-a-Long Program which occurs nightly behind Meadow Trading Post!  The program is followed by a big scree movie under the stars and there are two open fires for marshmallow roasting and s'mores making!

    Best Wishes,

    Amanda F.
