I am bringing an autistic child to Disney World for the first time. Any tips/suggestions that will make the vacation an enjoyable one?

Hello, Stacy!  Welcome to the Moms Panel!

I would highly recommend stopping by Guest Services at any of the Walt Disney World Parks and requesting a Guest Assistance Card (GAC).  This card will alert Cast Members to your child's needs and allow for certain accommodations for attractions.  For example, long wait times can sometimes pose an issue.  With the GAC, your little one and up to 5 guests can access an attraction by using an alternate entrance that will cut down on your wait time.  At Guest Services, you can speak with a Cast Member about some concerns you have for your little one and he/she will work with you to create a GAC that will help your child throughout your stay.  Disney wants to ensure that this is a vacation that your child will remember for a lifetime.

In addition to the GAC, I would highly recommend some downtime.  If your child is anything like mine, the tired spells will hit mid-day.  In order to tackle the evening hours, I would definitely head on back to your resort for a two hour nap.  Trust me, your child will be ready to go and you will be able to enjoy your remaining hours with a smile on your face.  I see one too many frowns on adults during the evening hours due to very tired children.
