We just booked our first cruise and it's only 35 days away. Trying to figure out what to do on our Nassau day. Can you just explore island without planning an excursion? How do you get on and off boat? Looking at exploring straw market or a beach? TIA!

Welcome aboard, Jenni! Congrats on booking this last minute cruise with Disney! You've got so much excitement ahead of you!

I just returned home last week from a wonderful sailing on the Disney Magic and this time we visited the Straw Market and wandered the shopping area in Nassau for the first time since we didn't have a Port Adventure planned.

You can absolutely walk off the ship and explore the port area on your own. When the ship has been cleared in Nassau for debarkation, there will be an announcement on the speakers, and then you can head down to the dock. Simply show your Key To The World card (and bring your photo ID as well) as you head off the ship. As you walk off the ship, follow the dock to the end, then you'll head through the indoor marketplace before being able to walk outside again into Nassau. If you head up Parliament street and take a right on Bay Street, you'll find all sorts of nice shops to browse. At Bay street and Market Street is the indoor straw market.

Just a little bit of information on the Straw Market. This is a cramped space, and many vendors will be calling out to tourists to purchase their goods. My daughter got a bit nervous about this, as she wasn't used to vendors trying to push items at her. We browsed for a few minutes and then headed back out to Bay Street to the storefronts which are much more laid back. I still think the straw market is a fun place to explore, as long as you know going into it that the vendors can be a bit pushy. There are some really unique souvenirs available there at good prices, as they are willing to negotiate with you. But, if you're looking for a more relaxing shopping experience, you'll find some great spots on Bay Street.

    Have a wonderful time, Jenni!
