I would like to book a Disney Cruise Vacation, but I'd like to understand what medical services are available on-board for kids. I understand there is a doctor on call 24/7, is it a generalist or a pediatrician (board certified in the US)?

Welcome aboard, Myrna! My family and I have enjoyed super healthy, happy sailings, but the couple of trips we did need to make to the ship's Health Center were great experiences!

My son once came down with a double ear infection half way through our cruise. I can't rave enough about the wonderful care he received. Here was my little guy wearing a Peter Pan costume from head to toe sitting on this huge exam table just as sad as can be. But, the Disney magic that doctor showed him made him smile and the medicine she prescribed got him back to his happy self quickly.

The onboard general practitioners include physicians and nurses, employed by a company independent of Disney. I checked with my friends at Disney Cruise Line, to find out that these doctors and nurses operate in accordance with the American College of Emergency Physicians healthcare guidelines for cruise ship medical facilities.

My friends Nancy and Beth, the two other Disney Parks Cruise Moms on the panel, have also both had great experiences with the medical team. Nancy was even able to use her trip insurance to be reimbursed for the cost of her son's treatment, and Beth said that the doctors onboard are sure to have enough of her son's emergency seizure medication on hand when she sails, even though she brings her own. What service!

Though the Health Center couldn't take my family's insurance to cover my kids' visits there, they were great to provide me with a detailed receipt so I could submit it to my insurance company for reimbursement once we got back home. I simply charged the cost of the visit to our stateroom account and submitted it to insurance once we got home. Super easy!

I hope you have no need to visit the medical center on your cruise, but if you do, you'll be in good hands! Happy planning!
