Is it a better idea to purchase everything separately rather than use a travel agent? I'm worried about trip protection and having the same benefits as someone who gets the package deal. We are staying at a moderate resort if that makes a difference.

    Hi there Patricia,

Thanks for your question.  This is a very personal opinion of mine, I have done it many ways and for me personally, have found that making my own reservations for everything separately works better for me.  It takes a bit longer to plan, but I really get to enjoy the satisfaction of being independent and not relying on others (if I make a mistake, I only have myself to blame!).

As far as trip protection goes, I find that if you are securing all your separate reservations with a credit card that many credit cards today offer better trip protection than many insurances you can purchase from a travel company.  You need to be very careful as many trip protection insurances have many loopholes if you needed to actually "collect" on it, so just make sure you read everything very carefully (especially the fine print).  I have very rarely booked directly with a travel agent, only because when I have, it has always cost me more than I could do it for myself (probably because I haven't found a good one...I know there are many reputable ones out there that try very hard for you, I just have not been lucky enough to spot one!).  If you go with my route, then I advise that you talk with your credit card company beforehand to see what kind of coverage you are getting (as they all have different terms and conditions and whether it is included. for example a "platinum or gold card" and if there is an extra charge, then weigh the pros and cons).  In my case I usually forfeit some of the added benefits for a bit better of a bargain while also being covered properly and the type of resort shouldn't make a difference.

I hope this helps you, again this is purely my opinion and what works best for me, I know a lot of people would definitely go the travel agent route and that has worked best for them...so go with your "gut" instinct and do what is right for you!

    Best wishes,
