Beth, We are planning our first trip, and would like to know when the best time to go is (smallest crowds) and should we stay on the resort or get a hotel close and commute? Best price? 2 adults aand 2 children 5 and 11

    Hi Dave,

Thanks for asking me about how to plan your first trip to the Walt Disney World Resorts.  First as to when to go. The lightest crowds are in January, after Easter but before Memorial Day, September, and after Thanksgiving until around December 15. The January and December timeframes could be chiller, and you may need a coat.  However, September and the spring should bring mild temperatures.

I am a big fan of staying on property. I have stayed off property and found that when I added the price of the rental car and expenses associated with it - gas and parking - along with the hotel, I could have stayed on property at a Value Resort or Moderate.

When you stay on property you get the Disney Transportation system, Magical Express to take to from the airport to your resort and the ability to book your Advance Dining Reservations 180 days in advance. You also get the experience of the Disney Castmembers' to help with any questions about Disney.

For a Moderate resort, Port Orleans is my favorite. I think it is a good value for your dollar. It is easy to get to and from the parks and is charming. If you can afford it, Yacht and Beach or the Boardwalk is a good way to go because you can walk to two parks and saving time is money in my book when touring.

    Have a great trip!
