Hi, Sarah! The decision whether to stay on or off property really depends on what your needs are. If you don't need transportation, want a large room for the money, and prefer some meals off site, then you might like staying off property. When my kids were little, we stayed off property many times. There are many affordable rooms that have 1 or 2 bedrooms, which was great for naps and early bedtimes.
On the flip side, there are many benefits of staying on property: Free airport transportation via Disney's Magical Express, Extra Magic Hours in the parks, Disney Dining Plan, and that all important "Disney Magic" 24/7! There are rooms for all budgets from Value to Deluxe Villas, and by staying on property there is no need for a car with the complimentary Disney Transportation System. Overall, if you are unfamiliar with the Orlando area and especially if it is your first trip to WDW, I recommend staying on property so you get that never-ending-pixie-dust-feel for your entire vacation!
