Back in the day when riding Space Mountain it was designed for 2 people to a seat. I have seen more recent pics where each rider has a seat to themselves. I am wonder how appropriate the ride is for a 5 year old. Testing him on Goofy's BS and BTMR first?

Hi Susan!  I too remember the early days for this ride when you sat directly in front of someone.  I remember how I had bruises on my shins from hitting the end of the car as we did the loops and was very happy when they redesigned the cars.

I would be hesitant to encourage a young child to experience this ride unless he or she has truly done some of the other roller coasters first and loved every minute of it.  The ride is in the dark which is intimidating to even adults and for me it is the toughest roller coaster at Disney to endure.  Goofy's Barnstormer is perfect for that age and then Big Thunder Mountain would be my suggestion for the next step.  I hate to see kids rushed into thrill attractions too early where they might have a bad experience and hate them from that point on.  I guess I can talk from personal experience as when I was five I begged to go on a Jack Rabbit roller coaster in Pennsylvania and never went on another one for over 20 years because I had hated it so much!
