ABD China Trip and we have a few questions. Can we do laundry along the way? Hoping to pack light. Do we need more formal clothes / shoes for any dinners / events (i.e. not shorts, t-shirts, flip flops). How much currency to take (China and Hong Kong). Thx

    Hi Catherine,

The hotels on the China trip are all luxury venues. There is a laundry service, but no laudromat-style facilities. I have the laundry price sheet from last summer (August 2013) at the Peninsula Beijing, which is quite representative. Having a t-shirt laundered cost 35 yuan, or just under $6.00US. Having a pair of slacks cleaned was 55 yuan, or about $9.00US. Additionally, there is a 15% service charge for all orders and additional fees for rush delivery. These prices are not out of line with luxury hotels in major US cities, but the rates can add up quickly.

If you're not going to do laundry, I'd plan to bring/wear at least a few tech-style exercise shirts that can be rinsed out and dried overnight, or several extra general shirts for each member of the family. When I toured last August the temperatures were well into the 90s. That, coupled by the relatively dirty air in China, meant that we were pretty gross after our daytime touring. It was nice to have something to change into in the evening that was clean, even if it wasn't fancy.

As for shoes, flip flops will be fine for some events, but you'll want a sturdy walking shoe for most days. Particularly on the Great Wall day, the terrain is rugged and uneven. Flip flops would be almost dangerous. Most of the dining is informal, with your daytime shorts and tees being totally sufficient. There were perhaps two meals (specifically one in Shanghai) where you'll likely want to wear something a bit nicer. The Shanghai restaurant is a posh five star restaurant in a major international city. Disney gets special dispensation to have their dress code waived, but all the other diners will be gussied up, so you may feel a bit out of place if you're in cut offs. Even something like slacks and a button down shirt for men or a nice sundress and sandals would be helpful for women.

I don't have enough characters to answer your money question. Please write back and I'll be happy to help.
