  • We're coming back for our daughter's 7th visit. She'll be turning 13. I'm trying to think of some new things suited to her age. She loves Disney but I want to keep it fresh and still a magical experience at 13. Any suggestions?

  • What a great question, Candace!

As a teenager, your daughter will be at the perfect age to learn more about the magic of Disney from those who know it best.  Did you know that you can dine with an Imagineer at Walt Disney World?  How cool would it be to enjoy a leisurely meal with one of Disney's famous magic-makers?  Similarly, if your daughter would like to learn what it takes to care for the beautiful and diverse creatures that inhabit Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge and theme park, you could book lunch with an animal specialist at Sanaa.  Both of these incredible experiences are reserved for guests ten and older.  They can be booked by calling (407) WDW-DINE up to 180 days prior to your visit.

Perhaps it's the educator in me, but I also think that thirteen is a wonderful age to explore the educational side of the Disney theme parks.  Have you heard about Disney's amazing Youth Education Series Programs?  I have enrolled my own students in these programs and they loved them.  Who wouldn't want to investigate the laws of physics by riding Disney's incredible roller coasters or dive into a hands-on history lesson in Liberty Square of the Magic Kingdom?  Teens can also look into possible careers in the arts, business, and marine science through the Youth Educations Series (YES).  You don't need to be part of a school group to take part in these programs.  There are separate dates when families can sign their children up to be a part of YES.  I hope those dates coincide with your upcoming visit.

Wishing your daughter a happy thirteenth birthday and a truly magical seventh visit to Walt Disney World!

  • I would start by contacting the Dream Makers over at Disney Floral and Gifts!  They will help you create a very special and unique keepsake moment for your daughter's special day, my suggestion being the Presenting Your Royal Princess in-room celebration.

The magic begins when she returns to her room from a day of birthday fun at the parks to realize that you have personally asked the Fairy Godmother to present her as a Royal Princess.  As soon as she happens upon your resort room door, she will notice the gorgeous satin Princess sash hanging from the knob, declaring her a Royal Princess. When she enters the room, she will find a note, hand written, to her, from the Fairy Godmother herself, proclaiming her a Princess, and telling her all about her new Royal heritage. From there, she will follow a trail of rose petals to discover many beautiful gifts left by the Fairy Godmother...gifts suited for a Royal Princes, including a bejeweled tiara, a sparkly magic wand, a Pixie Dusted rose bouquet, a gemstone trinket box and perfume decanter, a silver and crystal tiara necklace, and so much more.

After the Birthday Girl has been named Royal Princess, you should head over to the Grand Floridian for a mother/daughter tea to celebrate your new Royal standing.  Afternoon Tea is held at the Garden View Lounge amidst the regal beauty of the Grand Floridian Resort and is served in the authentic, British fashion.  You and your princess will enjoy sipping tea from fine china and noshing on dainty sandwiches and delicate pastries. The perfect way to end a perfectly-Princess day! Afternoon Tea is served daily between 2PM and 5PM and You can make a reservation up to 180 days in advance ONLINE or by calling (407)WDW-DINE.

  • Hi!

I just wanted to add on to what Disney Mom Ritzy suggested about the Wild Africa Trek.  The Wild Africa Trek is an immersive experience inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  The trek is 3 hours long and limited to 12 guests in each time slot. There are multiple treks each day, but I think the very first one is the best; I think it's more magical to be doing this before the park gets crowded.  Each guest wears a safety harness attached to a vest that allows each guest be tethered to a safety overhead track at various points on the trek, including when on the rope bridges. The first time guests use the tether is to get a stunning look at hippos, just 10 feet below in a riverbank. Guests also use the safety tether when going across a rope bridge that goes over the normal Kilimanjaro Safari trucks and then later over enormous crocodiles. Guests are then led to an overhang where they can stare down at the crocodiles at an extremely close range!  Finally, guests are taken on to the Kilimanjaro Safari in a private truck that lingers in all of the right spots allowing guests to get up and close and personal with the various animals on the safari.  The Wild Africa Trek is an incredible experience and I think your daughter will love it, especially if she loves animals.  In fact I recommend it to anybody who wants to get closer to the amazing animals in Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

I also wanted to suggest spending time at Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach, especially if your daughter has never been to them before.  I know my 12 year old son's favorite things to do at Walt Disney World are swimming in both water parks and going out on Seven Seas Lagoon or Bay Lake in a Sea Raycer.  In fact, he could easily spend all day on the water racing around!

    Enjoy planning your magical vacation!

  • I have a 13-year-old daughter, and have to admit, this is a big year for her! How sweet of you to help make your own teen's (!) upcoming trip to Walt Disney World even more memorable!

My Moms buddies who have answered thus far have given you some terrific ideas already!

We treated our daughter to spa treatments for her 13th birthday while sailing on the Disney Dream last summer, and that afternoon was truly a highlight of her sixth Disney cruise! There’s nothing to make a girl feel a bit more grown up than some time in a spa.

She was also thrilled with the shopping choices on our last trip to Downtown Disney. Perhaps a shopping spree would be just the right thing, too, especially with the addition of stores such as Apricot Lane Boutique, TrenD, Curl and Blink, by Wet Seal.  Top it off with a meal at her favorite DD restaurant where you can have a customized Specialty Cake delivered and you’re sure to have created a special day your teen is sure to remember!

Another treat might be for your daughter to get to choose at least one day where she has selected everything you do.  From which park, which attractions, which restaurant, pool time, etc., each one of my kids really feels special when we allow them to design a perfect Disney Day prior to our arrival, with Mom making all of the reservations and arrangements as soon as details are decided. Call (407) 827-2253 or check out Walt Disney World's Birthday Celebration page for more information about custom bakery cakes.

No matter what you select, please wish your daughter a very happy 13th birthday from all of us at the Walt Disney World Moms Panel!

  • There are some great answers posted already.  I'm sure your daughter is going to have a magical birthday celebration!

I know Dolphins in Depth was mentioned, but what about Seas Aqua Tour?  Guests get the opportunity to swim in the Caribbean Coral Reef aquarium while learning about the creatures in The Seas with Nemo & Friends.  She's just at that age where she no longer has to have an adult with her on the tour -- of course, it may be something you want to experience together.

Dining in Signature restaurants and shopping in Downtown Disney is also a fun thing to add on to any birthday celebration.  This might be a great time to treat your princess to her very first designer Mickey purse from TrenD.

  • Turning 13 is a milestone!  My mom took me to Walt Disney World for my 13th birthday and I will always remember it!

I suggest you plan some watersport fun!  I was able to take my son to surf at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon.  It was an incredible experience for both of us!! You get professional instruction/lessons and then you get to hit the 2.75 million gallon wave pool.
We don't live near an ocean so this is an experience that will stay with both of us for a long time. How many people can say that they have gone surfing at Disney!!! The instructors were incredible, and it is a small group so you will be able to have a lot of time in riding the waves.
This is something that we would normally not think of doing but I am so glad that we did--I can't express how much fun it was!!!
For more information you can call 407 WDW SURF

A few other fun watersport options are parasailing, jet skiing, waterski, wakeboard--all at Walt Disney World!!!
Next on our list is to try the parasailing!! How amazing to sail high above the Seven Seas Lagoon while getting a birds eye view of the Magic Kingdom!!   For more information on water sports available you can call 407 WDW PLAY

    I hope these suggestions help!!

Your daughter will have an incredible experience just being able to celebrate her birthday at the Happiest Place on Earth along with her family.

Wishing you a very magical vacation/birthday!

    Carrie

  • Wow!  You're daughter is finally reaching those magical "TEEN" years!  Why not celebrate by letting her "party like a teen rock star" during your vacation?!

First, check your star into some truly glamorous digs - Disney's Contemporary Resort.  There are so many amazing amenities here, and she will be right in the middle of the "action", just a short Monorail ride away from the entrance tof the Magic Kingdom.

Next, rent one of the fabulous Cabanas at Disney's Contemporary Resort swimming pool one day so she can sunbathe in style!  She will definitely feel like a rock star with all of the personalized attention she'll receive from an attentive Disney Cast Member, her own flat-screen television, MP3 docking station, stocked mini fridge, and plush towels & furnishings!  All this, and an opportunity to arrange for a massage and private dining, too!  Call (407) WDW-PLAY to set this up.

And why not go ahead and arrange for her to enjoy some of the amazing water sports on Bay Lake that Walt Disney World Moms Panelist Carrie mentioned while you're at it!  Call (407) 939-0754 to arrange parasailing, tubing, wakeboarding, and other water craft rentals.

Finally, top off the day at the top of the World - Walt Disney World, that is, with a special dinner at The California Grill, located on the 15th floor of the Contemporary Resort, with sweeping views of Seven Seas Lagoon and the Magic Kingdom!  She could end the night watching the Magic Kingdom fireworks bursting over Cinderella Castle from the magnificent skywalk!  Truly a night fit for a STAR!

  • There have been many great suggestions offered by this great panel. You will have some tough decisions to make when planning for your daughter's big birthday. My thoughts are centered around a Disney location that is often forgotten by most guests but it has some exciting and different opportunities offered. Fort Wilderness is a favorite place for our family for many reasons. It is quiet and a nice diversion from some of the busy park days. If your daughter is adventurous plan a day in this resort area. Make a reservation for horseback riding in the morning when the weather is cool. The last time we went we were fortunate to see deer along the trail. Stop at the Bike Barn and rent a canoe for the two of you. You can casually paddle through the back canals for about an hour while giggling and laughing at each other's paddling skills. From there you can head to the marina where you both can try your hand at more speed and rent a sea raycer boat. At some point stop for lunch at Trails End which is one of the most forgotten dining restaurants on property. Head to the Disney stables and walk around and meet Cinderella's coach ponies or say howdy to the large draft horses that often work in the Magic Kingom. Check out the original calliope while you are there. Finish your day with a dinner reservation at an early Hoop Dee Doo show. Then hop on a carriage and take a ride through the loops. During Halloween time it becomes an exciting Haunted Carriage ride! Before you head back to your resort stop at the beach and watch Wishes and the Electrical Water Pageant. Enjoy a full day or part of a day but there is certainly plenty to do for an outdoor adventurous birthday experience!

  • Hi!  Our other panelists have given you some amazing ideas.  Here are my thoughts:

Have you visited Downtown Disney?  There are so many shopping, dining and entertainment options you could easily spend a day here, giving your daughter a wonderful birthday, and the whole family could enjoy themselves too.  I personally recommend the following:

Characters in Flight is a tethered hot air balloon that gives you spectacular 360-degree views of Walt Disney World Resort.

Shopping!  I think the shops your daughter would particularly enjoy (and yourself too!) are D Street, TrenD, Something Silver, Disney's Design-a-Tee, Apricot Lane Boutique.

Ghirardelli's Soda Fountain & Chocolate Shop is my first choice for lovely coffee, but as the name suggests, they create fantastic ice-cream sundaes!

You could dine at one of many restaurants - all the Downtown Disney restaurants are now featured on the Disney Dining Plan, and can be booked up to 180 days in advance, online or by calling (407) 939 3463.

If you would like to see a truly wonderful show - I absolutely love Cirque du Soleil, La Nouba.  You can book tickets for this online or by calling (407) 939 7600.  We enjoyed this show so much last year, that we have already booked to see it again this year!  The Cirque du Soleil Boutique is another shop worth visiting!

I hope your daughter has a truly magical 13th birthday!

  • Happy birthday to your daughter!

For her big step into the grown-up teen years, I'm going suggest a very grown-up experience: Victoria & Albert's restaurant at the Grand Floridian. Victoria & Albert's is one of the finest restaurants in the entire country. Chef Scott Hunnell has won just about every culinary award in the book. Children under the age of ten are not permitted in the dining room and there is a dress code, the place is faaaancy.

But while young children cannot dine at V&A's, teens are welcome. I've brought my three teen daughters to Victoria & Albert's twice, and have third visit booked for later this year. Our first family visit to the restaurant was when my twins were ten. The girls were welcomed with open arms and treated with the upmost respect by entire staff at the restaurant.

Our motivation in brining them there was fourfold. First, the girls had been to Walt Disney World dozens of times and we were looking for something fresh, new and different to add to our vacations (like your situation). Second, we wanted to signal to the girls that they were getting to be real young ladies and that we knew they could rise to the occasion to behave accordingly. Third, we wanted them to have their first five-star restaurant experience at Walt Disney World, a place that's famous for its care and attention to children. And last, but most certainly not least, we wanted to share the absolutely, insanely incredible food with them.

V&A's is pricey, but if you want to signal to your new teenager that she's a real-life princesses, then there's no better experience at Walt Disney World.

  • Hi there!

I'm so glad that you've chosen to return to Walt Disney World to celebrate your daughter's 13th birthday!

I'd recommend a mother-daughter shopping trip to Downtown Disney. There are so many interesting, trendy stores for the two of you to experience together.

Perhaps while you're there, visit DisneyQuest Interactive Theme Park for 5 floors of electronic Disney gaming, including virtual reality, 3D encounters and classic video games from the past.

Or take in a show at AMC Downtown Disney 24 and enjoy Fork & Screen reserved seating with upgraded seats, a personal call button, and seat-side meal service. That's just plain cool!

Teens are certain to love checking out movie and TV show memorabilia while enjoying a delicious meal at Planet Hollywood. Just be sure to book online or call (407) WDW-DINE or (407) 939-3463 prior to your visit.

Those childhood years really do fly by almost as quickly as Tinkerbell in Pixie-Hollow and you have to seize every opportunity to enjoy this precious time together. Wishing your daughter a magical 13th birthday!

  • My fellow panelist have given you some amazing suggestions.  Turning 13 years old is such a milestone, and I agree that is should be celebrated in a special way!

I think it would be wonderful to book a Mother (or Father) and Daughter spa day at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa.  This spa is absolutely fantastic.  They have a Teenage Facial which will instill in her good skin care habits as well as making her feel great.  The Spa has some packages that include a facial, massage, and manicure or pedicure for a luxurious afternoon.

I think that after a wonderful spa experience, a lunch at The Turf Club Bar and Grill would satisfy anyone's hunger, especially a teenager!  Make sure you let your server know that it is her birthday so they can help her celebrate.  I hope you have magical birthday trip!

  • Hi Candace!

Congratulations & Happy 'Teen' Birthday to your daughter!

My daughter just turned 13 a week ago and our next visit will be her 10th ... so I can absolutely relate to you wanting to keep things fresh & Magical on her birthday visit in particular!

I'll share a few things I know my daughter enjoys tremendously that will hopefully include some things you haven't yet experienced.

If my teen could choose any place at all to dine at Walt Disney World for a special meal, she would have a hard time choosing between three in particular for dinner time. Teppan Edo in Epcot, 'Ohana at the Polynesian Resort or the Spirit of Aloha Dinner Show. If you should choose 'Ohana, time your reservation to be arriving at least 30 mins before Wishes is scheduled for that evening and request to wait for a window-side table. You'll be treated to a viewing of Wishes over the treetops while you dine, as the restaurant lights are dimmed and the music is piped in. It's fantastic.

To make her evening extra special since she's become an official Teen Princess, consider having something Magical delivered to her official birthday dinner such as the 'A Magical Wish - Fulfill a Dream' which includes a sparkling fairy tale wand and a Swarovski crystal silver bracelet engraved with the words: Dream, Wish, Believe. Many other beautiful options are available to order in advance through Disney Florist.

Wishing you a very Magical time as you celebrate at Walt Disney World Candace!

    Kirsten

  • How exciting for your daughter to be making her seventh trip to Walt Disney World, as well as, celebrating her 13th Birthday! I also have a 13-year-old daughter and would love to share some things that she has really enjoyed on recent Disney Vacations!
*Our family loves staying at Disney's Beach Club Resort for its great theming, central location, and Stormalong Bay! Kids and teens will love spending time by Stormalong Bay, a beachside water park, offering a lazy river, hot tubs, pool side activities, and "Shipwreck", the tallest slide on property.
*Beaches & Cream Soda Shop is a great place for a birthday celebration while listening to jukebox favorites and enjoying hamburgers, sandwiches and ice cream sundaes. The Kitchen Sink is the ultimate birthday dessert and will not disappoint!
*Visit The Pearl Factory at the Beach Club Resort. We had a pair of pearl earrings made from the pearl our daughter chose, which remains one of her all time favorite WDW souvenirs.
*A visit to Periwig's Salon at the Beach Club Resort or Ivy Trellis Salon at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa for getting her hair done professionally before a special birthday dinner.
*A Special Birthday Dinner at 'Ohana, located in Disney's Polynesian Resort, California Grill at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort or Narcoossee's at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.
*Shopping at Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa - Basin White is part of a chain carrying unique bath and spa products like soy candles and salt scrubs. My daughter thoroughly enjoyed creating her own soy candle.Summer Lace is an upscale ladies shop featuring Disney Dooney and Burke bags, which teen girls love!
Please tell your daughter "Happy Birthday" from the Mom's Panel, Candace! Sending pixie-dusted wishes for a simply Magical 13th Birthday Trip!
    :-) Jodie

  • Walt Disney World is a wonderful choice for a special birthday celebration. Your daughter is destined to have a magical celebration no matter what you choose to do.

Tinker Bell, fireworks, and a bountiful display of sweets would make an awesome birthday party. The Tomorrowland Terrace Fireworks Dessert Party held in the Magic Kingdom has all the desserts you care to eat and reserved seating for the Wishes Nighttime Spectacular fireworks show in the perfect spot to see Tinker Bell fly overhead. What girl wouldn't enjoy delicious dishes and Wishes for a birthday celebration?

My teenagers always surprise me with some of their choices. For our next trip to Walt Disney World my children have requested a visit to Blizzard Beach, Afternoon Tea at the Garden View Tea Room and a character breakfast at Chef Mickey's. A water park visit is the only one I would have predicted teenagers would choose. So like my friend Andrea I would emphasize letting your daughter make some of the decisions about your visit. Helping to plan our itinerary builds excitement and anticipation for our kids.

    Happy birthday to your teen!

  • Hi Candace! how exciting that your girl is about to become a teen! You've got me thinking of what to do for my daughter's 13th next year, and my fellow moms have come with so many great ideas!

I would plan a shopping day at Downtown Disney. Give your daughter a Disney Gift Card and let her shop shop shop! Enjoy a nice lunch. There's tons of great spots to choose from, but we love Fulton's Crab House. While you're there, get a mother daughter caricature done, the perfect memento of her perfect birthday! After dinner, Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba is a fantastic choice. Or you can also check out the latest movies at the AMC Theatre, where they've added a dine in feature - dinner or snacks while watching the latest movie!!

When you get back to her room, it would be fun to have a surprise waiting for her! Disney Floral & Gifts have so many items to choose from in all price ranges.

Wishing your daughter the most magical birthday Candace!!

  • Hi Candace!!!

Happy 13th Birthday to your daughter!!!  I am so excited that I get to spend my son's birthday for the first time at Walt Disney World with him!!  I know that we share in the same excitement!!!

I see that a lot of my fellow panelists have mentioned various Disney Tours and Special Experiences.  I even see that one mentioned the Dolphins in Depth experience located at The Seas with Nemo and Friends Pavilion.  I would like to go into more "depth" about this experience!!  Please excuse the pun...I couldn't help myself!!

So many Disney Tours and Special Experiences are geared for those 16 years or older.  This is one of the first very unique and special experiences that a 13 year old can do.  What a wonderful way to celebrate a 13th birthday!!!

It is so, so cool to be able to stand in the water and "play" with the dolphins.  The picture of my wife and me with a dolphin still sits in our living room to this day!!  I was also able to learn so many new things about dolphins and definitely have a deeper appreciation and respect for dolphins when I see them.

I am sure that your daughter would love this experience and would definitely feel older since there wouldn't be any young children on the tour.  I am sending lots of Pixie Dust your way for a magical 13th birthday experience and celebration!!!

    Scott

  • Celebrating a birthday at Walt Disney World is a great way to create some magical memories that will last forever. Her birthday needs to start off special so head on over to the Magic Kingdom. Located on Main Street, U.S.A., City Hall is the place to begin. Go inside where a friendly cast member will give the birthday girl her very own personalized birthday Celebration Recognition Button. She can also get birthday greeting from Goofy himself on one of the antique phones located inside. I've found that this is a great way to start any birthday. No birthday ensemble is complete here without a set of Mickey Mouse Ears. They even have very cool 'it's my birthday' Mouse ears. Once the birthday girl puts on the combination of the birthday button coupled with the Mickey Mouse Ears the true magic will begin. She will suddenly begin to hear people wishing her a happy birthday. First the birthday wishes may come from a cast member or two, but soon park guests will start with the birthday wishes when you are in line for an attraction, waiting to see a great show or just eating a yummy meal. It really adds a little pixie dust to an already special day. One last tip, you can make the memories even more special by using the Disney pre-visit PhotoPass offer. It is so much fun to get the CD with all the fun family photos of your magical vacation and go through them again to relieve that special day. The CD is yours to keep and you it has some magic which lets you customize the photos with colorful borders, your favorite Disney characters and other neat stuff. I hope your whole family has a lovely vacation and a magical birthday at the Happiest Place on Earth.

  • The wonderful thing about Walt Disney World is that you can experience something new and exciting each time you visit!  I have a few suggestions: 1.     Book at mother and daughter mani-pedi session at the Grand Floridian Spa for a fun afternoon 2.     Spending a day visiting the resorts: The resorts at WDW are all beautiful and themed elaborately. It is so much fun to visit the pools at the other resorts and check out the lobby, shopping and dining that each resort has to offer. 3.     Book and Advanced Dining Reservation at one of Disney's signature dining experiences, such as California Grill or Narcoossee's. Make it an event by dressing up and even telling the Cast Member when you book that it is her birthday. They will bring out a special birthday treat for her, complete with candles for her to make a wish. 4.     Call 407-939-7600 to purchase tickets to Cirque du Soleil's La Nouba show in Downtown Disney. 5.     Enjoy live entertainment and great food at the House of Blues in Downtown Disney 6.     Rent a watercraft, such as a Sea Raycer or boat and enjoy an afternoon at the marina. 7.     Consider booking a tour, such as the Walt Disney: Marceline to Magic Kingdom Tour.  I know that no matter what you choose to do, you will have a magical vacation! Magically, Stacy

  • Making the jump to the teen years at Walt Disney World:  perfect!

With this being her special day and her already a seasoned guest at WDW, what if you let your daughter be in charge of the day?  The parks, the attractions, the restaurants would all be her first picks and choices. It will truly be her day!

Of course, you may want to make sure to know her dining choices so that you can have a birthday cake ready to surprise her with.  Just call the cake hotline in advance at 407-827-2253.

  • Hi there, Candace!

Happy, happy birthday to your almost-teen!

So many excellent answers from the Panelists .... you are going to have your hands - and planner! - full, trying to work in as many of them as possible.

Have you considered allowing her to bring a friend, if circumstances permit? There is nothing like letting a young Disney expert introduce a special friend to her magical vacation destination!

And of course, I can't say enough about allowing her to engage in the fun, more grown-up activities available that Disney offers to its younger Guests: spa treatments, age-appropriate nightlife at Downtown Disney, etc.

One fun option might be to host a family pool party at one of the cabanas available for rent. These poolside cabanas feature "personalized service from an attentive Cast Member. Additional amenities include plush furnishings, chilled soft drinks, bottled water and a flat-screen televisionall in an exclusive area reserved just for you!"

You'll find these cabanas at Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Polynesian Resort, and Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.

    For reservations, please call (407) WDW-PLAY or (407) 939-7589

Have a wonderful time - and again, happy birthday to your daughter!

    See you later, celebrator,
    -Deborah B.

  • Hello Candace!

Well, you have received some amazing suggestions to celebrate your daughter's big day!!!  Walt Disney World is definitely the perfect place to celebrate such an awesome occasion!

Speaking of celebrations...nothing says "Let's Celebrate" more than ice cream!  My suggestion would be to take your daughter to Beaches and Cream Soda Shop at Disney's Beach Club Resort for the most incredible ice cream sundae called "The Kitchen Sink!"  This monster sundae includes eight scoops of ice cream with ALL the fixings!  YUMMY in your TUMMY!

No matter what you decide, we all know that you are going to have a MAGICAL birthday!  Thanks so much for allowing the MOMS Panel family be a part of helping you plan this very special day!

    Happy BIRTHDAY!!
