- Hi Katie! I have done the Auto Train and you are not crazy. We drove all the way down from Massachusetts to do it! It wasn't by choice at first.
We fly often. One year, when my Princess Coco Muffin was about 2, we flew and didn't realize that she had an ear infection. After that, if you even said the words air and plane, she would go into hysterics. Begrudgingly, I signed us up for the Auto Train for our next trip to see Mickey.
All I can say is WOW! Once you give them your car at the Lorton Station, your vacation begins. We checked in, made our dinner reservations and boarded. We got the family suite with a bathroom. Each car has its own steward to assist you. We went to the free Virginia wine tasting party before dinner. The dinner was a white-table cloth event and delicious. After dinner, we watched a movie(it's always a G or PG family movie) and had beverages in the bar car. My daughter and mother went to bed and my husband and I stayed up with the grown ups and watched the scenery. The next morning, we had a nice continental breakfast. It takes about an hour and 30 minutes for them to unload all the cars. The train gets to Sanford around 9 am. We were in Downtown Disney by 10:30!
We did the Auto Train three times. It was nice to have our own car with our own stuff, like pool toys and car seats. Thankfully, my daughter is over her "ear thing" and we can fly now. The Auto Train is more expensive than flying, even with a rental car. But I think it's a great way to have more of a vacation. The airport days are "lost." With the Auto Train, you start relaxing as soon as you hear "All Aboard!"
The Walt Disney page Little Ones is a great resource for first time visitors planning a trip with young children. Have a magical trip!
