- Hi Wendy -
There is currently no direct bus transportation from Downtown Disney to the theme parks. To get from DD to a theme park, you will need to make a transfer at a resort. However, this does not have to be your resort. For example, if you want to get from Downtown Disney to the Magic Kingdom, it would make the most sense to take the bus from DD to either the Grand Floridian, where you'd take the monorail one quick stop to the MK, or to the Contemporary, where you could take a five minute walk to the MK. This would hold true no matter where you were staying.
To answer your specific question, to go from DD to the Animal Kingdom, I would probably take the bus from DD to one of the nearest resorts (Saratoga Springs or Port Orleans) and then transfer to the AK bus. It would also work to take the bus from DD to the Animal Kingdom Lodge and then transfer to the AK park bus. In this situation, I'd just get on whichever bus that arrives first at DD that's moving in the general direction of my ultimate destination.
What you really want to avoid is backtracking. An example of this would be if you were staying at the Contemporary. You would NOT want to take a bus from DD to the Contemporary with the goal of getting to the Animal Kingdom because the Contemporary and the AK are on opposite sides of Walt Disney World.
If you have questions on the ground, any of the bus drivers should be able to give you advice on the best route to take.
Good luck with your planning. Please let us know what else we can do to help.
