Answered Question - Disney Parks Moms Panel

  • We are Disney Vets. we are going in March. My mom was recently diagnosed a 2nd time with breast cancer. Her biggest worry was whether she would be able to go to WDW with us. She can. I would like to make this trip really special for her. Any suggestions?

  • Hi Michelle. I know this is a very delicate time for you and your family. I want to give you the right answers. My family had this similar issue when my dear grandmother was diagnosed with cancer the summer before our trip in 1999.  She had just started her chemo and we were very nervous about the trip.  We had talked about canceling it. Our family discussed it with her medical team and they said that they thought that a trip with her family would be the best medicine for her at that time.

It so happened that I was also about 10 weeks pregnant(a nice surprise!). We talked at home and decided that we would take it easy that trip. First, I made sure that we packed snacks and such, so that she always had something to eat or a cool drink at her fingertips.

Then, we planned lots of character meals. We still have the pictures of her with all the characters and she was just so happy. The characters hugged her and made her feel great; taking her mind off of the treatments. Her favorite thing is the Magic Kingdom fireworks. Because of the crowd issue(lowered immunity) I reserved a private cruise and we watched from the Seven Seas lagoon. It was truly magical and still makes me teary when I think of her clutching the edge of the boat and looking up into the sky. . .

If she will, try to convince her to at least some part of the day use a wheel chair. It really helps when she might get tired out.  At the entrance to the theme parks, there is a special book called, Guide for Guests with Disabilities. This pamphlet also talks about stamina issues for people with illness or other issues.

I truly hope this helps and that you and your mom and your family have a special and magical trip.
